MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team began their three-day "Wisconsin journey" in impressive fashion Friday evening, as the Cardinals cruised to an 8-1 nonconference win over Concordia (Wis.) at the Paley Tennis Center.

"We played really well tonight," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg, whose team — 2-0 on the young season — will play three more matches over the next two days. "It was a great start to our weekend adventure."

SMU opened with three straight wins in the doubles matches, with Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.)-Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) and Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.)-Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) collecting 8-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, while Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.)-Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) added a 9-7 win at No. 3.

Wolford, Kaczorowski, Smith, Olmscheid and Lawrenz followed with straight-set singles wins, while Johnson was a tough-luck, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7 loser at No. four singles.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, squaring off against Carroll at 8 a.m. and Wisconsin Lutheran at 12:30 p.m. at Moorland Tennis Center in New Berlin, Wis.
