GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team capped its Wisconsin Weekend in come-from-behind style on Sunday, as the Cardinals rallied from a 4-3 deficit with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to seal a 5-4 nonconference win over St. Norbert at the Four Seasons Tennis Center.
"What a great match, and a great way to end the weekend," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team pushed its season-opening winning streak to five straight — including four wins in the past three days. "The guys really came through today, a total team effort all the way around."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition, as
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) teamed for a 9-7 win at No. 1, and
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and
Nick Kasel (Minneapolis, Minn.) added an 8-2 win at No. 3.
St. Norbert, however, responded with wins in three of the first four singles matches completed — Smith's straight-set victory at No. 3 the lone SMU win — to grab a 4-3 advantage with No. 1 and No. 2 singles still competing.
And compete they did.
Kaczorowski pulled the Cardinals even, 4-4, with a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2, while Wolford came through with a three-set, 6-1, 6-7, 10-4 victory at No. 1 to seal the Cardinals' fifth straight win.
"Tim and Collin really came through when we needed them — but what a great team effort," Halberg said. "Everyone came to play today."
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, when they opening Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 6 p.m. match against Carleton at the Winona Tennis Center.
