WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team picked the perfect time to put together what coach
Jeff Halberg called their best performance of the season.
The Cardinals outlasted Concordia in all three doubles matches and won two of the three contests that went a maximum three sets, as SMU dropped the Cobbers 8-1 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match Sunday at the Winona Tennis Center.
"This was a great match," said Halberg. "Concordia played very well, but we played our best match of the season — just a great effort right through the team."
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) breezed to an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles, while the SMU teams of
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and
Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.), and
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) chipped in 8-5 and 8-6 wins, respectively, to give the Cardinals a 3-0 advantage.
Kaczorowski, Lawrenz and Olmscheid added straight-set singles wins, while Wolford chipped in a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 win at No. 1 and Smith tallied a 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 victory at No. 3.
The Cardinals (1-1 MIAC, 10-3 overall) are back in action on Thursday, as the Cardinals travel to St. Paul, Minn., for a 4:30 p.m. conference matchup with Hamline.
