KOEHLER, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team struggled to get out of the gate on Sunday, and the Cardinals could not recover from the slow start in dropping a 7-2 nonconference setback to UW-Oshkosh Sunday.
"It took us a while to get going today," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team had its eight-game nonconference winning streak snapped with the loss to the Titans. "Once we got going, I thought we played pretty well — give UW-Oshkosh credit, they are a very good team."
UW-Oshkosh jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match, before adding straight set wins in four of the six singles matches.
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) accounted for SMU's two singles wins — and the Cardinal pair certainly had to work for the victories, going the maximum three sets in each.
Wolford rallied from a first-set loss in the first set to beat the Titans' Bobby Brooks 3-6, 7-6 (5), 11-9 win at No. 1, while Smith outlasted Aidan Sauberlich 6-2, 1-6, 10-3 at No. 3.
The Cardinals (8-2 overall) are now off until March 15, when they host Morningside College and Luther in a pair of nonconference matches at the Winona Tennis Center.
