MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg predicted that his Cardinals were in for a war when they squared off against Hamline Thursday afternoon.
And a war is exactly what the Cardinals got.
Fortunately for Halberg, his Cardinals were armed and ready, getting wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, then icing a 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory with wins in four of the six singles matches at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.
"We knew coming in that this match was going to be a war," said Halberg. "And that's exactly what it was — but the guys really gutted it out and came away with the win.
"It was a great team effort."
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) teamed for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and
Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in an 8-4 victory at No. 2 as SMU grabbed a 2-1 lead heading into singles competition.
Wolford, Smith and
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) recorded straight set singles wins, while Kaczorowski chipped in a three-set, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 triumph at No. 2 singles to seal the win.
The Cardinals (2-1 MIAC, 11-3 overall) are now off until March 30, when they square off against Loras in a 2 p.m. nonconference match in Dubuque, Iowa.
