GameDay Preview
CLERMONT, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team managed just five hits and one run in its nonconference game against Cornell (Iowa).
Which was more than enough cushion for Cardinal freshman
Ashley Betzold (Farmington, Minn.).
Betzold tossed a complete-game shutout, limiting Cornell to just four hits — while striking out seven — as the Cardinals snapped a five-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Rams in the first of two nonconference games Friday.
The Cardinals made it look much easier in the final game of their spring trip, routing Webster 13-2 in five innings.
Kristen Thelen (Rochester, Minn.) was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored to pace the SMU offense, while Betzold,
Alex Raske (Chicago, Ill.) and
Kathi Opsahl (Elk River, Minn.) accounted for SMU's other three hits vs. Cornell.
The Cardinals' matchup with Webster appeared to be another nailbiter, as the Gorlocks held a 2-1 advantage heading into the third inning.
In the third, however, SMU erupted for three runs — before adding five more in the fourth and four in the fifth en route to the lopsided victory.
Raske,
Mariah Harper (Schaumburg, Ill.) and
Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.) all finished with two hit to pace SMU's 12-hit attack, while Betzold drove in three runs and
Gabby Geissler (St. Louis, Mo.) added two RBIs.
Betzold recorded her second complete-game pitching performance of the day, scattering six hits, while striking out three and walking one.
The Cardinals (4-6 overall) are now off until March 26, when SMU is scheduled to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Gustavus.
