GameDay PreviewNORTHFIELD, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg knew his Cardinals were going to have their hands full going up against St. Olaf Saturday afternoon.
The Oles entered the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown red-hot — riding a three-match winning streak.
And no matter how hard they tried, the Cardinals could not cool after the sizzling Oles, as St. Olaf dealt Saint Mary's a 9-0 conference setback.
"I thought we played pretty well," said Halberg. "We just couldn't seem to catch a break. So many of the matches were close affairs — we just didn't get any bounces to go our way.
"St. Olaf has a nice team and they played well."
The Oles jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the three doubles matches, and they never took their foot off the gas, winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Only
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) at No. 1 singles could win a set off the Oles, falling 6-2, 2-6, 11-9.
The Cardinals (2-4 MIAC, 13-6 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, as SMU hosts Gustavus in a 3:30 p.m. conference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
