GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — There's a good reason Gustavus has won the last 25 straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season men's tennis titles — and are the unanimous pick by the conference coaches to win No. 26 in a row this season.
They are good — very, very good.
And Saint Mary's University learned just how good first-hand Sunday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center, as the Gusties dealt the Cardinals a 8-1 conference setback.
"We played really well today," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "Doubles was excellent — we just didn't have the firepower to match such a deep, talented team as Gustavus.
"They have been the cream of the crop in the MIAC for many, many years — and this year is no exception."
The Cardinals gave the Gusties all they could handle in the three doubles matches, as
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and
Nick Kasel (Minneapolis, Minn.) collected an 8-6 win at No. 3, while
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove) and
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) dropped a 9-8 decision at No. 1, and
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) fell 8-4 at No. 2.
Unfortunately, the Gusties dominated the singles matches, winning all six in straight sets.
The Cardinals (2-5 MIAC, 13-7 overall) are off until April 25-26, when they close out their regular-season schedule with back-to-back home matches against Saint John's and Macalester at the Winona Tennis Center.
