GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team put together one of its best overall performances of the season Friday evening against Saint John's.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the ball just couldn't get the ball to bounce their way, as the Johnnies — fueled by three, three-set singles wins and a doubles victory that needed a tie-breaker to decide — dropped SMU 8-1 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
"I could not have asked more from our guys," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "The guys battled from start to finish — we just couldn't seem to catch a break. The final score definitely didn't tell the story of this match, it was an amazing battle."
The Johnnies jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles play, with
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) teaming for a 9-8 (7-5) victory at No. 1 for the Cardinals.
Wolford and Kaczorowski also found themselves in three-set marathons in singles play, as Wolford dropped a 7-5 1-6, 10-8 decision at No. 1, while Kaczorowski fell 3-6, 6-0, 10-8 at No. 2.
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) also came up short in a three-setter, falling 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 at No. 4.
The Cardinals (2-6 MIAC, 13-8 overall) close out their regular-season schedule on Saturday, hosting Macalester in a 2:30 p.m. MIAC match at the Winona Tennis Center.
