GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg could not have written a better — or more exciting — end to the Cardinals' 2014 season.
The Cardinals fell behind 2-1 after the doubles portion of their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Macalester — including a 9-8 (13-11) marathon loss at No. 2 — and found themselves trailing 4-3 with two singles matches remaining.
But Saint Mary's rallied with straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to seal a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Scots at the Winona Tennis Center.
"The ladies ended the season on a real high note," said Halberg. "After going down 2-1 in doubles and trailing 4-3 in singles, it was awesome to see them pull out the win.
"What a wonderful way to end the season."
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) and
Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) were the heroes of the day for the Cardinals, as Jorgensen collected a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, while Buss posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 to ice the victory. The duo also accounted for Saint Mary's lone doubles win, teaming for an 8-5 victory at No. 3
Lindsey Reinsich (Hastings, Minn.) and
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) also notched straight-set singles wins for Saint Mary's, which closes out its season with a 4-6 conference mark and a 10-8 overall record.
