Cardinals fall short vs. high-powered Tommies

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team played well during its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against St. Thomas.
 
Problem was, St. Thomas played better.
 
UST got off to a quick 3-0 start in doubles play, before completing the conference sweep with six singles victories en route to a 9-0 win over the Cardinals at the Winona Tennis Center.
 
"We played well," said coach Jeff Halberg said. "(UST) just played better today. St. Thomas is tough and deep — they were tough to beat."
 
The Tommies jumped out to their 3-0 lead by winning the three doubles matches 8-8-3, 8-4 and 8-3, before completing the win by recording five straight-set singles victories, while SMU's Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) took the Tommies' Grant Johnson to three sets before falling, 4-6, 6-0, 10-6 at No. 6.
 
The Cardinals (2-3 MIAC, 12-5 overall) the Cardinals step out of MIAC play on Wednesday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a 4 p.m. nonconference match against Northwestern.
