FRIDLEY, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team made it a double-double against Northwestern Wednesday afternoon at Lifetime Fitness.

The Cardinals picked their second win in their last two meetings against the Eagles — and for the second time, it was an 8-1 nonconference win.

"It was a great win for us," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "We got off to a very strong start in doubles and never looked back. (Northwestern) beat us the last time we were up here two years ago, and the guys were determined not to let that happen again."

SMU opened with wins in all three doubles matches, as Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.)-Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.) collected an 8-5 win at No. 1, Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.)-Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) tallied an 8-3 win at No. 2 and Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.)-Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) added an 8-1 triumph at No. 3.

Wolford, Kaczorowski, Smith, Olmscheid and Garen Meritt (Sioux City, Iowa) added singles wins, while Johnson suffered a hard-fought, three-set, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 setback.

The Cardinals (13-5 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend, as SMU travels to Northfield, Minn., on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match against St. Olaf, before returning home for a 3:30 p.m. MIAC showdown with Gustavus on Sunday at the Winona Tennis Center.
