ST. PETER, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota freshman Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) was hoping for a repeat performance when he took to the tennis court for Day 2 of the Gustavus Midwest Open.

Unfortunately—after opening his collegiate career with back-to-back wins to reach the fourth round—came up short, falling to UW-Eau Claire's Conrad Felten in straight sets, 7-6 6-1.

Giesen, who had a walk-over due to injury to reach the second round on Friday, picked up his first collegiate victory with a three-set, 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 victory in the second round, then added a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the third to set up his showdown with Felten.

Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) and Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) picked up right where they left on Friday, collecting an 8-6 win over Grinnell to go with they first-day 9-8 tie-breaking victory to reach the quarterfinals. The Cardinal duo's run ended in the quarters, however, falling 8-2.

Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) and Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.)—owners of a pair 9-7 victories in Friday's opening day of the two-day tournament—were eliminated by a team from Grinnell 8-3 in their lone match on Saturday.

The Cardinals officially kick off their 2015 season on Jan. 31, when Saint Mary's hosts Cardinals in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match scheduled for noon at the Winona Tennis Center.
