ST. PETER, Minn. — The doubles team of
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) picked up Saturday right where they left off Friday at the Gustavus Midwest Open.
And once they put the pedal to the metal, they never took their foot off the gas.
The duo, coming off an 8-2 opening-round win, rattled off three straight wins Saturday—8-4, 8-5, and 8-6—to earn a spot in Sunday's 9 a.m. semifinals.
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) and
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) dropped a heartbreaker in the second round, falling 9-8 (2), while
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) and
Garen Merritt (Sioux City, Iowa) came up empty in their second-round doubles match, falling 8-3.
In the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships,
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) and
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) lost their second-round match, falling 8-2.
The Cardinals kick off their 2016 spring season on Jan. 29, entertaining Bethany Lutheran in a 5 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
