COON RAPIDS, Minn. —
Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.) kicked off her third Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championships in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon, as the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota junior carded a team-best 85 in the opening round of the 54-hole season-ending tournament.
Fueled by Gatley's opening-round 85, the Cardinals finished with a 362 team score and are sitting in 10th, two shots back of ninth-place Augsburg and four shots behind eighth-place St. Olaf.
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) finished three shots back to Gately—who was tied for 19th after Day 1—shooting an 88.
Paula Avila (Weslaco, Texas) chipped in a career-best 94, while
Haley Jung (Monticello, Minn. / 96) and
Tiarra Thompson (Jonesboro, Ga. / 103) rounded out the Cardinals' five.
Carleton, which boasted three of the top four individual scores—including first-round leader Grace Gilmore's four-over-par 76, own the Day 1 team lead, four shots in front of St. Catherine and three up on St. Thomas.
The second round of the three-day event will take place at Bunker Hills Golf Course on Sunday, with the final 18 holes being played on Monday.
