Kling paces Cardinals' 10th-place run at MIAC

COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's golf team entered Monday's final round of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships hoping they had saved their best for last.

Unfortunately, after opening the 54-hole tournament with a 362, and following that up with a second-round 359, Saint Mary's struggled to a final-round 369 to finish 10th in the team standings.

Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) turned in Saint Mary's best round of the day on Monday, carding an 88 for a team-best 261 54-hole total. The sophomore opened the event with an 88 on Saturday and followed that up with an 85 on Sunday.

Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.), who kicked off her third conference championships with back-to-back career-best 85s, finished with a 94 on Monday for a 264 total. Haley Jung (Monticello, Minn.) closed out her final MIAC Championships with a 91 Monday to go with her 96 on Saturday and 89 on Sunday for a 276 total. Paula Avila (Weslaco, Texas / 93-101-96—290) and Tiarra Thompson (Jonesboro, Ga. / 103-100-110—313) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.

St. Thomas ran away from the rest of the field in claiming the team title, posting a 54-hole score of 937. Carleton finished a distant second at 959, with St. Catherine (967), Saint Benedict (997), and Bethel (1011) rounding out the top five. Gustavus (1014), St. Olaf (1057), Concordia (1076), Augsburg (1080), Saint Mary's (1090), and Macalester (1103) completed the tournament field.

Carleton's Grace Gilmore captured medalist honors, shooting a final-round 81 for a 231 total and a three-shot win over St. Thomas' Emily Thul. Saint Benedict's Natalie Amudson (234), Ziyi Wang of Carleton (235), and Rachel Morris of St. Thomas (237) completed the tournament's top five.
