Cardinals collect 8-1 conference win vs. Pipers

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's and women's tennis team's proved to be rather ungracious hosts Friday evening, as the Cardinals cruised to a pair of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victories over Hamline at the Winona Tennis Center.
 
The Saint Mary's men pushed its winning streak to seven straight, rolling to a 9-0 conference win over the visiting Pipers, while the Cardinal women dispatched of Hamline 8-1 en route to their first conference win of the season.
 
"It was a dominating performance by both teams," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg. "We got off to great starts in doubles and never let up.
 
"It was a great way for us to head into spring break."
 
The Cardinal men picked up a pair of 8-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, then added an 8-6 victory at No. 3 to jump out to a 3-0 lead. And in singles, Saint Mary's dropped just 13 games in posting straight-set wins at Nos. 1-5. Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) completed the 9-0 sweep with a three-set victory at No. 7, rallying from a set down to beat HU's Gabriel Guarin 4-6, 6-4, 10-2
 
It was more of the same in the women's match, as the Cardinals raced out to a 3-0 lead with 8-3, 8-1, and 8-3 doubles victories. Kirsten Hoffmann (Apple Valley, Minn.), Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.), Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.), Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) and Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) completed the 8-1 win with straight-set victories.
 
The Cardinal men (2-1 MIAC, 8-2 overall) are now off until Tuesday, when they head to Orlando, Fla., for nonconference matches against King's College and Regis College, before squaring off against Morningside (Iowa) a day later.
 
The Saint Mary's women (1-3 MIAC, 4-3 overall) also head to Orlando, Fla., for their next two matches, taking on King's College on Tuesday, before taking on Morningside (Iowa) on Wednesday.
