Women's PreviewWINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's and women's tennis teams picked up their first wins of the season in impressive fashion Friday evening, sweeping their nonconference matches against Bethany Lutheran at the Winona Tennis Center.
The Cardinal men, who dropped an 8-1 season-opening decision to conference power Carleton last Saturday, were unstoppable against the Vikings, cruising to a 9-0 victory.
The Saint Mary's women, meanwhile, bounced back from a 9-0 loss to defending MIAC champion and national qualifier Carleton with a stellar 9-0 victory over the Vikings.
"Both teams went out and took care of business tonight," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Solid wins by both teams."
The Cardinal women completely dominated the Vikings, winning all three doubles matches without losing a game, while adding straight-set singles wins in all six matches—including 6-0, 6-0 victories by Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.), Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) and Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.).
Like their female counterparts, the Cardinal men were dominant in doubles play, dropping just four games in sweeping to a quick 3-0 lead.
And in singles,
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) led the charge with straight-set, 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, while
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) was the only Cardinal to be taken to a third set, winning 6-1, 6-7 (4), 10-3.
The Cardinal women are now off until Sunday, when they square off against Martin Luther in a 3 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
The Saint Mary's men, meanwhile, are back on the courts for nonconference matches against Luther (11 a.m.) and St. Norbert (5 p.m.) on Saturday, before facing Martin Luther at 3 p.m. on Sunday. All three men's matches will be played at the Winona Tennis Center.
