GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — It had been 10 days since the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team racked up its 10th straight victory, rolling to an 8-1 nonconference win over Morningside (Iowa) in its final match of its spring trip to Orlando, Fla.
But Saint Mary's showed absolutely no signs of spring-trip rust, as the Cardinals returned to the court—and to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play—with yet another impressive performance, cruising to win No. 11 in a row, dropping Concordia 9-0 at the Winona Tennis Center.
"In the preseason coaches poll, we were ranked behind Concordia—the guys were really fired up to prove that inaccurate," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team's 11-match winning streak is the longest under Halberg's 15-year tenure. "It was a great overall team performance, and a huge conference win."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles matches, getting 8-1, 8-6 and 8-6 victories respectively.
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) each rebounded from first-set losses to win 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 and 3-6, 6-0, 10-8 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, while the other four singles matches were straight-set Saint Mary's wins. Wolford's win was especially gratifying, as the junior's three-set triumph came against the Cobbers' Isaac Toivenen, who entered the match ranked No. 17 in the region.
With his win—and
Brett Giesen's (Cato, Wis.) straight-set win at No. 3 singles, Amiotte and Giesen each pushed their singles winning streaks to 11 straight.
The Cardinals (3-1 MIAC, 12-2 overall) are back in action next Saturday, traveling to the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 7 p.m. conference match against St. Thomas.
