Match SummaryMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — It took three sets, but
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) picked up his 12th straight singles win and
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) recorded his eighth straight singles victory Saturday evening against St. Thomas.
Unfortunately for the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team, those two three-set wins were the only winning streaks that would remain in tact, as the Tommies handed the Cardinals a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the U of M Baseline Tennis Center.
"St. Thomas is a talent team that is very deep," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Tim played an amazing match at No. 1, and we got some really solid performances up and down the lineup—St. Thomas was just a bit too much for us tonight."
While Wolford and Giesen extended their winning streaks with three-set victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, the Tommies' victory put an end to Saint Mary's 11-match winning streak—the longest in Halberg's 15 years at the helm—while also snapping
Brenden Amiotte's (Rapid City, S.D.) 11-match singles winning streak, not to mention Wolford and
Collin Kaczorowski's (Suamico, Wis.) 12-match winning streak at No. 1 doubles.
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) was not as fortunate as Wolford and Giesen in his three-set match against the Tommies, dropping a three-set loss at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 10-3, while Kaczorowski and
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) suffered straight-set singles setbacks.
The Tommies took an early 3-0 lead with dominating 8-1, 8-2, and 8-3 wins in the three doubles matches.
The Cardinals (3-2 MIAC, 12-3 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, traveling to Waverly, Iowa, for a 2 p.m. nonconference match against Wartburg.
