Match SummaryWAVERLY, Iowa — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota showed no ill affects from Saturday's 7-2 conference loss to St. Thomas—a loss that snapped the Cardinals' season-high 11-match winning streak—when they took the court against Wartburg Sunday afternoon.
In fact, the Cardinals were in prime form, as Saint Mary's cruised to an 8-1 nonconference victory over the Knights.
"That was a great win for the guys," said assistant coach
Blake Duden. "(Wartburg) finished second in their conference a year ago and were a formidable opponent. We came out strong in doubles and never let (Wartburg) back in the match."
The Cardinals opened with 8-1, 8-4 and 8-2 wins in the three doubles matches, before picking up wins in five of the six singles matches.
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) and
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.)—who accounted for the Cardinals' two wins against the high-powered Tommies on Saturday—extended their singles winning streaks to 13 and nine, respectively against the Knights. Giesen posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3, while Wolford tallied a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 1.
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) and
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, with
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) rallying from a set down to post a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 win at No. 4.
The Cardinals (13-3 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, hosting UW-La Crosse in a 4 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center.
