Cardinals fall to red-hot UW-La Crosse 7-2

Match Summary | Photo Gallery | GameDay Preview

WINONA, Minn. — Last Saturday, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team entered its conference match against St. Thomas riding an 11-match winning streak—only to have the Tommies put an end to that run with a 7-2 victory.

Wednesday afternoon, the Cardinals found themselves involved in another match that included an 11-match winning streak—and another 7-2 outcome.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the end result did not fall in their favor, as the Eagles jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches and added five straight-set singles wins in securing the 7-2 victory—and their 12th straight win.

"We lost a tough match to an opponent that thoroughly deserves its regional ranking," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg. "Tim (Wolford) and Collin (Kaczorowski) played a great match at No. 1 doubles, and Tim followed that up with a stellar showing at No. 1 singles.

"The guys gave it everything they had—unfortunately, it just wasn't enough."

Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) collected the Cardinals' doubles victory, posting an 8-5 victory at No. 1, while UW-La Crosse posted wins of 8-3 and 8-2 at No. 2 and No. 3 to take its 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.

Wolford followed up his doubles win with his 10th straight singles victory, outlasting UW-La Crosse's Peter Stadum 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 at No. 1 singles.

That, however, would be the Cardinals' lone singles win, as UW-La Crosse recorded straight-set wins at Nos. 2-6—including a 6-1, 6-3 victory by the Eagles' Tony Mirasola over Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) at No. 3 that snapped Giesen's season-high 13-match winning streak—to ice the victory.

The Cardinals (13-4 overall) are back on the road on Saturday, traveling to the U of M Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 5 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Macalester.
