Match SummaryMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team got off to a solid start in its key Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Macalester.
The Scots, however, had a better finishing kick, rallying from a 2-1 deficit after the doubles matches to lift Macalester to a 5-4 conference win over the Cardinals at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center Saturday evening.
"Macalester is a very talented team," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "This was a classic collegiate matchup from start to finish. Tip your caps to (Macalester), they played a great match."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches, as
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) teamed for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) and
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) added an 8-3 win of their own at No. 3.
Wolford needed three sets to extend his singles winning streak to 11 straight with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 win at No. 1, while Amiotte added a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4, but that the Scots answered with straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 to seal the Macalester victory.
The Cardinals (3-3 MIAC, 13-4 overall) are now off until April 11, when they travel to St. Peter, Minn., for a showdown against conference power Gustavus. Match time is set for noon.
