Jeff Halberg knew his men's and women's tennis teams were going to have their hands full when they took the courts against powerhouse Gustavus Saturday afternoon.
And, unfortunately for Halberg, the Gusties did not disappoint, handing both the Cardinal men and women 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setbacks.
"We did not play our best tennis on the guys side, but Gustavus certainly showed us why they are nationally ranked," said Halberg. "They are a tough, tough team.
"The ladies played hard and never gave in," Halberg added. "Gustavus is ranked for a reason—strong at the top and deep throughout.
"Despite the losses, it was a good experience for both teams."
Gustavus picked up 8-3 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles in the men's match, before adding an 8-0 victory at No. 3 to take a 3-0 lead into the singles portion. The Gusties dropped just 14 games in posting straight-set wins in all six singles matches to seal the victory.
In the women's match, Gustavus opened with 8-4, 8-2 and 8-0 doubles wins, and were equally as impressive as their male counterparts in singles, losing just 13 games in earning six straight-set victories.
The Cardinal men (3-4 MIAC, 13-6 overall) are back in action on Sunday, traveling to Saint John's for a 1 p.m. match, while the Saint Mary's women (3-5 MIAC, 8-6 overall) head to Saint Benedict on Sunday for a 10 a.m. MIAC showdown with the Blazers.
