MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. —
Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) picked up right where she left off when she took to the pool Saturday afternoon for the second day of the Jean Freeman Invitational.
The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota senior—coming off a coming off a 14
th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke during Friday's opening day of the two-day event—earned her second straight breaststroke consolation final appearance, touching the wall in 2:31.37 in the preliminaries. VanBeest followed that effort up with a 2:33..25 to place 16
th overall.
Along with her effort in the 200 breaststroke, VanBeest also added a time of 5:05.96 in the 400 IM, while
Reese Galewski (Winona, Minn.) touched the wall in 1:01.85 in the 100 butterfly and a 20:14.83 in the 1,650 freestyle,
Christina Weldai (London, England) notched a 58.63 in the 100 freestyle.
Kizzy Bell shaved six seconds off her season-best in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:37.88, while
Chloe Morrison (Ashkum, Ill.) earned a spot in the MIAC Championships with her time of 21:15.32 in the 1,650 freestyle.
On the men's side, Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) led the way, whittling seven seconds off his season-best time in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:22.67, while Matt Clayton (Forest Lake, Minn.) recorded a 51.4 in the 100 freestyle and a 2:30.65 in the 200 breaststroke, and Lucas Gerads (St. Cloud, Minn.) posted times of 59.92 in the 100 backstroke and 56.98 in the 100 butterfly. Nick Sawchuk (Rochester, Minn.) added his name to the list of MIAC qualifiers, turning in a 100 freestyle time of 54.43 to lead off the Cardinals' 400 relay.
The Cardinals are now off until Jan. 14, when they head to Decorah, Iowa, to take part in the Luther Norse Sprints.
