GameDay Preview ORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team closed out its spring trip in thrilling fashion Sunday evening, getting three-set singles wins from
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) and
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) to rally for a 5-4 nonconference win over Adrian.
"What a great win," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team picked up its second straight win of the day—having beaten Ohio Northern 7-2 earlier. "We played a very tough opponent and came up with some big wins—No. 2 doubles won a nailbiter, and Brett and Alex came through with huge three-set wins to seal the victory.
"It was a great way to end the trip."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches, getting an 8-4 win from
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) and Giesen at No. 3, while Holm and
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) outlasted Adrian's Brandon Brom-Mitchel Bulger 9-8 at No. 2—winning the tiebreaker 7-5.
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) chipped in a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win at No. 1 singles, but the Bulldogs were victorious at Nos. 2, 5 and 6 to take a 4-3 lead with two matches to play.
Holm saved eight match points to beat Adrian's Bulger 1-6, 7-6 (6), 11-9 at No. 4, and Giesen followed with a thrilling 7-6 (8), 2-6, 10-7 at No. 3 to give the Cardinals the victory.
The Cardinals (7-4 overall) return home to the Winona Tennis Center next weekend, hosting UW-La Crosse in a 6 p.m. nonconference match on Friday, before entertaining St. Thomas in a noon Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
