GameDay PreviewORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team dug itself a hole after the three doubles matches Sunday afternoon, and no matter how hard they tried, the Cardinals could not climb out.
Otterbein raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play in the teams' nonconference match, and rolled to an 8-1 win over Saint Mary's.
"We got off to a bit of a slow start and that made it tough—especially against a team as talented as Otterbein," said coach
Jeff Halberg. "But we really battled through the singles matches and put forth a great effort."
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) continued her impressive freshman debut for Saint Mary's, collecting her sixth straight singles win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1.
Unfortunately for Halberg, that would be the Cardinals' only win, as Saint Mary's dropped the other five singles matches—including three that went the maximum three sets.
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) and
Ashley Syed (Lakeville, Minn.) both won the opening set of their matches at No. 3 and No. 4, but dropped the next two—Jorgensen falling 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, while Syed lost 3-6, 6-0, 10-3.
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) also suffered a three-set setback at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
The Cardinals (4-2 overall) are right back in action Sunday night, closing out their spring trip with a nonconference match against Adrian.
