ST. PAUL, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg called it the greatest comeback in Cardinal tennis history.
And it's pretty hard to argue with the Cardinal head coach.
Down 4-0 after the three doubles matches and the No. 5 singles match, the Cardinals rallied for five straight victories—including three, three-setters—to rally for a 5-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Hamline Saturday afternoon at HU's Holt Courts.
"What a great win—greatest comeback in men's tennis history," Halberg said. "The guys just refused to lose. I could not be prouder of their performance today.
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) and
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) got the Cardinals on the board with their 6-4, 7-6 and 6-2, 6-3 wins at No. 5 and No. 3 singles, respectively, before
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) rallied from 8-5 down in the third set to win 6-0, 2-6, 10-8 at No. 1 singles to make it 4-3.
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) fended out six match points to win his match at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 15-13, setting up
Brenden Amiotte's (Rapid City, S.D.) 6-0, 2-6, 10-8 match-clinching win at No. 2 singles.
The Cardinals (1-7 MIAC, 9-11 overall) are back in action on Sunday, squaring off against Macalester in their regular-season finale. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at the Winona Tennis Center.
