WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team got an "A" for effort from their head coach.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that effort wasn't enough to claim the "W."
Macalester got off to a quick start, and never looked back, in handing the Cardinals a 9-0, season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Sunday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center.
"This was a great match to end the season—and a lot closer than the final score may indicate," said coach
Jeff Halberg. "Everyone played with a great deal of heart and put in a monumental effort—it wasn't enough against a good Macalester team."
Macalester jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles play, sandwiching a pair of 8-6 wins around an 8-2 victory at No. 2.
The Scots then completed the sweep with wins in all six singles matches, including a pair of three-set victories against Cardinals playing their final collegiate matches. Joshua Doyle handed
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) a 5-7, 7-6 (5), 10-8 setback at No. 1, while Wilson Merrell dropped
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) 5-7, 6-2, 10-6.
The Cardinals closed out the season 1-8 in conference play, while finishing 9-12 overall.
