WINONA, Minn. — It took the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team a little while to get on track, but once they did, the Cardinals were unstoppable.
And thanks to their come-from-behind 5-4 win over Macalester Sunday, the Cardinals' hopes of earning a berth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoffs are still alive.
"What a great win," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg, whose Cardinals kicked off the weekend with an 8-1 win over Hamline on Saturday. "Macalester came out of the blocks quickly, but we fought back with amazing spirit to get the huge win.
"Our fate is no longer in our hands," added Halberg, noting that the Cardinals must now wait to see how Bethel and Hamline fare in their matches on Thursday. "We have done all we could—now we'll just wait-and-see."
The duo of
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.)/
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) picked up Saint Mary's lone doubles win, an 8-0 win at No. 2, as the Cardinals headed into the singles portion of the match trailing 2-1.
Fortunately, the Scots' lead did not last, as Sonday, Vandenberg, Boeve, and
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) all recorded straight-set singles wins to seal the victory.
With the win, the Cardinals close out the regular season sitting at 4-6 in conference play and 13-7 overall.
