GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team could have used a break or two in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Bethel Saturday afternoon.
Two of the three doubles matches were decided by three games or less, while two of the six singles matches including a first- or second-set tiebreaker, and a third went the maximum three sets.
And in all five of those matches, it was the Royals who came out on top, as Bethel dealt the Cardinals a 9-0 setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"Every match was so close—the final score really doesn't do this match justice," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We just could not seem to buy a break.
"I'm proud of the effort the guys put forth."
Bethel kicked things off with 8-6, 8-3, and 8-5 wins in the three doubles matches, before completing the sweep with five straight-set singles wins—and a three-set marathon victory at No. 1.
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) was the hard-luck loser at No. 1 singles, as the senior won the first set 6-4, but dropped the next two, 6-4 and 12-10, against BU's Matt Schull.
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) fell 7-6 (7-4) in the first set of his loss to Jakob Bartels at No. 3 singles, while
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) lost 6-1 in the first set and dropped a 7-6 (7-4) decision in the second.
The Cardinals (0-6 MIAC, 7-10 overall) step out of conference play on Thursday, hosting North Central (Minn.) in a 7:30 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center.
