LAKE CITY, Minn. — Heading into the 2016 season,
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) had not recorded a round lower than 81 in her collegiate career.
Sunday afternoon, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota junior carded her fourth sub-81 round, firing a seven-over-par 79 in leading the Cardinal women's golf team to a 16
th place finish at the D3 Classic.
Kling, who opened the two-day tournament with an 80 to finish with a 159 36-hiole total, has posted her first three collegiate rounds in the 70s this season, tallying a pair of 79s and a career-best 77.
Fueled by Kling's 159, the Cardinals put together a second-day 364—seven shots better than Saturday's opening-round 371.
St. Thomas, behind Marja Sorensen's co-medalist 147 (73-74), took home the team title with a 608, 27 shots better than runner-up St. Catherine. Carleton finished third (646), while Bethel (637) and Grinnell (637) rounded out the top five.
Grinnell's Vidsuhi Sinha equaled Sorensen's 147 total, shooting rounds of 72 and 75, with teammate Virshali Sinha and Carleton's Alyssa Akiyama finishing one shot bak.
Along with Kling's 159, the Cardinals also got a 172 (82-90) from
Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.), a 187 (99-88) from
Ana Reding (Stillwater, Minn.), a 223 (116-107) from
Michaela Heuckendorf (Plymouth, Minn.), and a 228 (110-118) from Anika Blesener (North St. Paul, Minn.). Gately's opening-round 82, and Reding's second-round 88 were both collegiate bests.
The Cardinals are now off until Oct. 8-9-10, when they head to Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn., for the 54-hole Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
