Men's Tennis ITA Regional/Midwest Open GameDay

ST. PETER, Minn. — Several members of the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team will be taking part in the USTA-ITA Midwest Region Championships and Midwest Open, hosted by Gustavus, beginning Friday and running through Sunday.

USTA-ITA Midwest Region Sites:
The Swanson Indoor Tennis Center, located on the west edge of the Gustavus campus in St. Peter, Minn., will serve as headquarters for the USTA/ITA Midwest Region Championships, with matches taking place at Swanson and the adjacent Brown Outdoor Courts.

USTA-ITA Midwest Region This And That:
• More than 100 of the top players in the Midwest will take part in the tournaments. The first round singles matches in the Midwest Open are scheduled for 9 a.m. The first round matches in ITA singles championship begin Friday at 10:15 a.m. For the first three rounds of singles in the Midwest Open, matches will be two out of three sets with a 10-point tiebreak for the third set. In the ITA main draw singles, all matches will be two out of three full sets.  On Saturday and Sunday, all singles matches in both tournaments will be full two out of three sets. For doubles, all matches will be eight-game pro-sets until the finals of both the ITA and the Midwest Open. The finals of both doubles tournaments will be two out of three sets with a 10-point tiebreak for the third set. … 2016 ITA All-American Mohanad Alhouni of Gustavus comes in as the No. 1 overall seed in the ITA Regionals singles draw. Behind Alhouni sits second-seeded Brady Anderson of Coe College, third-seeded Herman Abban of Carthage College, and fourth-seeded Zach Ekstein of Gustavus.  … ITA Regional doubles competition will begin Friday at 3:15 p.m. The duo of Abban/Lukasz Jaworski of Carthage College will enter the tournament as the top-seeded doubles team. They will be challenged by second-seeded Alhouni/Patrick Whaling of Gustavus, third-seeded Luke Elifson/Marty Beck of the University of St. Thomas, and fourth-seeded Ekstein/Tommy Entwistle of Gustavus. … The singles and doubles champions from the USTA/ITA Regional Championships will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships. The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, and junior/community colleges.

Cardinals at USTA-ITA Midwest Region—Their Last Appearance:
• October 2-4, 2016 * St. Peter, Minn.: After going a perfect 4-for-4 in their first four matches at the Gustavus Midwest Open, the Cardinal duo of Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) had their run to come to an end Sunday afternoon. Lawrenz-Holm, who teamed for wins of 8-2, 8-4, 8-5, and 8-6 to open tournament play, dropped a heartbreaker in the semifinals, falling to UW-La Crosse's Sam Gowan and Mdekim Dejene, 8-6 | Day 1 Recap * Day 2 Recap | Day 3 Recap

Cardinals Up Next:
• The Cardinals kick off their 2017 spring season on Jan. 27, entertaining Martin Luther in a 5:30 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center. Saint Mary's will being Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play a day later, hosting Carleton at 3 p.m., also at the Winona Tennis Center.
