WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team proved to be a rather ungracious host Friday evening in its nonconference match against Bethany Lutheran at the Winona Tennis Center.
The Cardinals, coming off a pair of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference losses in their last two contests, got back on the winning track, collecting a 9-0 nonconference win over Bethany Lutheran.
But it was anything but easy.
"That was a good win for us," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "They guys played well, and they needed to—that was the best Bethany Lutheran team we've ever faced."
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 3-0 win after the three doubles matches, getting an 8-4 win from
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) and
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) at No. 1, while Bobby Tiedeman (Euclid, Minn.) and
Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) added an 8-0 victory at No. 2, and
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) and
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) added an 8-5 victory at No. 3.
Amiotte,
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.), Tiedeman, Zuzek and Sobczak all followed up their doubles success with straight-set singles wins, while
Kyle Swanson (Oak Grove, Minn.) needed three sets to complete the sweep with a 1-6, 7-5, 10-6 win at No. 6.
The Cardinals (2-2 overall) are right back in action on Saturday, heading to the Moorland Tennis Center in New Berlin, Wis., for nonconference matches against Carroll (noon) and Wisconsin Lutheran (3 p.m.).
