GameDay Preview
WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team enjoyed some April-like weather in February—and made the most of it.
The Cardinals, normally confined to playing indoors this time of year, took advantage of the 62-degree weather and played their nonconference match against Wisconsin Lutheran outdoors.
And playing outdoors suited the Cardinals just fine, as they picked up their second win in as many days, rolling to an 8-1 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran at the Kilgour Tennis Courts.
Saint Mary's was forced to move indoors for its second match of the afternoon—and, unfortunately indoors was not as favorable, as Carroll dealt the Cardinals a 5-4 nonconference loss at the Moorland Tennis Center.
"We got off a great start on the day with our effort against Wisconsin Lutheran," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Everyone played very well in that match and it was a hard-fought victory.
"The Carroll match was a real battle," Halberg added. "It was a match that could have gone either way, and on this day, Caroll just came out on top."
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in its match against Wisconsin Lutheran with victories in each of the three doubles matches—including a win at No. 3 by default.
Saint Mary's added four straight-set singles wins—and a win by default at No. 6—in sealing the win.
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.), Bobby Tiedeman (Euclid, Minn.),
Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.), and
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) combined to lose just six games in their four singles wins—including a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Sobczak at No. 5.
The Cardinals'
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) suffered the lone loss against WLC, dropping a 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 marathon to the Vikings' Derek Sallmann at No. 1.
Carroll opened a 2-1 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, and picked up straight-set singles wins at Nos. 1, 2, and 3, while
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.), Aelx Zuzek (), and Sobczak collected Saint Mary's singles wins, with Zuzek-Sobczak also notching the Cardinals' lone doubles victory, with an 8-1 win at No. 3.
The Cardinals (3-3 overall) return home next Friday, squaring off against Hamline in a 6 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
