MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team could not have asked for a better start to its 2017 Spring Training trip. The Cardinals earned a huge 7-2 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering thanks to the outstanding play of
Brenden Amiotte.
"It was a good start to the break," men's and women's tennis head coach
Jeff Halberg said after the dual match. "Brenden had an excellent day, the best he's played all season."
Amiotte earned two huge points for Saint Mary's by winning both his doubles match with partner
Bobby Tiedemann and singles match. Amiotte and Tiedmann earned the Cardinals first point of the day with an 8-3 victory over the Raiders at the No. 2 doubles spot. Amiotte was even better in singles play, earning a sweep at the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory.
Tiedmann was also spectacular for Saint Mary's with a win at the No. 3 singles spot. He defeated MSOE's Tom Smith in dominating fashion 6-0, 6-1.
In addition to Amiotte and Tiedmann,
Alex Zuzek and
Robbie Sobczak earned wins in both doubles and singles play. As the Cardinals No. 3 doubles team, Zuzek and Sobczak beat the Raiders No. 3 team of Austin Campbell and Tyler Hannen by a score of 8-3 before earning straight set victories in their individual singles matches.
Brett Giesen battled at the No. 2 singles spot but suffered a hard fought 6-4, 7-6 loss to David Chen, while Saint Mary's No. 1 doubles team of
Alex Holm and
Andrew Johnson fell 8-2.
Thanks to the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-3 on the season and hold a 0-2 record in MIAC play. Saint Mary's will return to action on Monday, February 27 to face Lawrence University.
