STEVENS POINT, Wis. — It's been an all-for-one, one-for-all kind of a season for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team.
The Cardinals headed into their nonconference match against UW-Steven's Post boasting a 3-2 record—with all five matches being decided by 9-0 decisions.
And Sunday afternoon it was just more of the same, as Saint Mary's defeated the Pointers 9-0 to improve to 4-2 this season.
The Cardinals got off to a strong start by sweeping the matches in singles play.
Laura Sonday and
Megan Vandenberg dominated at the No. 1 spot, earning a quick 8-1 victory to set the pace for the afternoon. That was followed by an 8-4 victory by
Ashley Syed and
Marissa Kinzer at the No. 2 spot and an 8-3 win by the No. 3 doubles team of
Sheyenne Bauer and
Summer Lardy.
Saint Mary's strong play in doubles carried over to singles, where the team earned six points with six straight set victories. Sonday took down her opponent 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot, while Cassie Barr and
Haley Jorgensen each earned 6-1, 6-1 straight set victories in their respective matches.
Vandenberg played in the closest match of the afternoon, as she almost needed a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Stevens-Points' Erin Lemmer. However, the senior from De Pere came out on top 7-6 in the opening set before breaking Lemmer in the final game of the second set to come away with a 7-6, 7-5 victory.
Julia Boeve found success at the No. 4 singles spot with a 6-4, 6-3 victory while
Emily Strezishar won her singles match in dramatic fashion 6-3, 7-6.
Thanks to yet another 9-0 victory, Saint Mary's improved to 4-2 this season with a 0-2 mark in conference play. The Cardinals will return to the court on March 10 for a 6 p.m. game against Hamline University.
