WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team put together one of its best performances of the season, but it was not enough, as the Cardinals dropped a 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision to Macalester.
"The guys played really well against an excellent team," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Though we came up short in the end, it wasn't for lack of effort—we fought hard from start to finish."
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) came away with the only singles win for the Cardinals, winning a three-set marathon over the Scots' Ben Wilson 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-11), 10-7.
Two double's teams scored wins for the Cardinals, as
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) and
Bobby Tiedemann (Euclid, Minn.) rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 2, and
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) and Sobczak added an 8-3 win at No. 3.
The Cardinals (1-5 MIAC, 7-6 overall) are now off until next Saturday, when they travel to the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 6:30 p.m. conference matchup against Bethel.
