ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team could not match Bethel's depth Saturday afternoon, as the Royals handed the Cardinals a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Bethel Outdoor Courts.
"The guys battled hard, but this was a bridge too far," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Brenden (Amiotte) and No. 1 doubles played especially well."
Bethel jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion, despite a stellar effort by the Cardinals'
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) and
Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.), who dropped a marathon 9-8 decision at No. 1.
The Royals collected five straight-set singles wins, while
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) took Bethel's Matt Schull the a third set, before falling 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 at No. 1.
The Cardinals (1-6 MIAC, 7-7 overall) return home to the Winona Tennis Center next Saturday, hosting St. Olaf in a 3 p.m. conference match.
