GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team found the perfect remedy for what ailed them Sunday.
The Cardinals, coming off a pair of nail-biting Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches the previous two days against St. Catherine and Bethel, stepped out of conference play on Sunday—and took out their frustrations on Alverno and St. Norbert.
Saint Mary's opened the day with a convincing 9-0 shutout of Alverno, before adding a 7-2 victory over St. Norbert.
The Cardinals got off to a roaring start against Alverno, dropping just a combined four games in sweeping the three doubles matches.
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.)/
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) and
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.)/
Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) posted 8-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, with
Emily Strezishar (East Grand Forks, N.D.)/
Summer Lardy (Richmond, Minn.) adding an 8-0 win at No. 3.
And it was more dominance in singles play, as Sonday, Vandenberg,
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.),
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.),
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.), and Bauer all posted straight-set victories.
Playing their second match of the day—and fourth in the last three days—didn't seem to faze the Cardinals against St. Norbert, as Sonday/Vandenberg and Jorgensen/Kinzer teamed for doubles wins, with Sonday, Vandenberg, Barr, Boeve, and Jorgensen adding singles wins.
Sonday played the match of the afternoon at No. 1 singles against SNC's Elizabeth Manlick, rallying from a set down to post a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 12-10 victory at No. 1.
The Cardinals (9-5 overall) close out their busy weekend on Monday, squaring off against Carroll in a 3 p.m. nonconference match in Waukesha, Wis.
