ST. PETER, Minn. — Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) kicked off her season on a positive note Friday afternoon, scoring a marathon, three-set singles victory — and leading the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team's charge at the ITA Midwest Regional and Gustavus Fall Invitational.

Lois opened singles play Friday with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win over Coe's Eliza Sundermann, but was not as fortunate in the second round, dropping a 6-1, 6-3 decision to St. Thomas' Taylor McLeod.

Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) came up short in her ITA singles opener, as the senior fell to Grinnell's Emma Gaydos 7-6 (4), 6-2, but earned a bye into Saturday's consolation action.

Barr and Lois weren't finished, however, as the Cardinal duo teamed for an 8-3 win over St. Nobert's Nicole Pfotenhauer/Emma Merrill. Their ITA run ended, however, in the second round, falling to St. Thomas' Taylor McLeod and Paige McLeod.

While Barr and Lois were battling in the ITA Midwest Regional, the rest of the Cardinals were taking part in the Gustavus Fall Invitational.

Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.), Sarrianna Hoffer (Wausau, Wis.), and Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) got off to winning starts, with Morgan beating Rebakah Corson of Wartburg, 8-4, while Hoffer was an 8-4 winner over Wartburg's Amber Laube and Becker picked up an 8-3 victory over Aurora Schossow of Luther.

Unfortunately for trio, their tournaments came to a screeching halt in the second round, as Morgan lost a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 marathon to Bethel's Libby Kurtzman, while Hoffer lost to Gustavus' Lili Elofson 6-3, 6-0, and Becker came up short against the Gusties' Hayley Trebel, 6-1, 6-4.

Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had a busy afternoon in her first Gustavus Fall Invitational appearance, bouncing back from an 8-3 loss to Ashley Saniter of Concordia (Wis.), beating Concordia-Moorhead's Emily Savageau  8-3, and outlasting UW-La Crosse's Lara Henriksen 8-7 (0).

Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) came up empty in her two GAC Invite matches, opening with an 8-4 setback to Alyssa Guse of Wartburg, before falling to Guse's teammate, Jamie Know, 8-2.

Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.) dropped her two matches in her collegiate debut, falling to Antonnia Sanna of Concordia (Wis.) 8-3 in the opening round, before suffering her second straight 8-3 setback to Taylar Smith of Northwestern.

Later in the afternoon, Morgan and Johnson teamed up to go 1-1, opening with an 8-6 win over Ashley Saniteri/Antonnia Sanna of Concordia (Wis.), before falling to Luther's Aurora Schlossow/Megan Grimm, 8-3.

Dosser and Hoffer, meanwhile, collected an 8-7 (5) win over St. Catherine's Eri Loterbauer/Maggie Muechler to earn a spot in Saturday's second round.

Frye and Becker teamed for their first collegiate doubles match, falling 8-5 to Wartburg's Guse and Corson before earning a spot in Saturday's consolation round thanks to a first-round bye earning a bye.

Day 2 of the three-day event begins Saturday at 9 a.m.
