WINONA, Minn. — When
Laura Sonday graduated in May — after playing every match of her four-year career at No. 1 singles — Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg knew those would be big shoes to fill.
And
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) done just that — in grand fashion.
Lois picked up her second straight straight-set singles win in the Cardinals' No. 1 slot in last Friday's 8-1 win over Northwestern — and the effort did not go unnoticed, as she was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Lois kicked off her reign at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Martin Luther's Anna Hemmelman on Jan. 24, and was untouchable in her second match, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Northwestern's Shawna Spears last Friday.
The junior has been equally as impressive in doubles play, teaming with
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) for an 8-1 win at No. 1 against Martin Luther, and adding an 8-1 victory against Northwestern.
Lois and the Cardinals return home to the Winona Tennis Center on Saturday, playing host to UW-Superior in a 7 p.m. nonconference match.
