ST. PAUL, Minn. — As the temperatures in April begin to heat up a bit, so do the Saint Mary's University track and field teams.
The Cardinals recorded 10 first-place finishes and posted 31 Top 5 performances — including two individual firsts by
Matt Boone (Mindoro, Minn.) — at the non-team-scored Hamline Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Boone has been dominant all season in the sprints, and continued that trend on Saturday, breezing to back-to-back victories in both the 100 (10.85) and 200 (22.02).
Jon Meaden (Rosemount, Minn.) added a first in the 800 (1:58.95), while
Kyle Lichttenegger (De Pere, Wis.) delivered a leap of 6.72 meters to win the long jump,
Coleton Strupp (Holmen, Wis.) cleared 4.40 meters to win the pole vault, and the 4x100 relay team won with a time of 41.64.
Noah Anderson (St. Paul, Minn.) and
Jake Homan (North Mankato, Minn.) posted second-place performances in the 200 (22.36) and shot put (13.12m), respectively, and the 4x400 added a second-place time of 3:37.85. The Cardinals also got a pair of third-place efforts by
Sean Curran (Appleton, Wis.) in both the discus (39.93m) and hammer (49.65m), as well as third-place showings from
Matthew Stack (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / pole vault, 4.25m),
Quinn Steinbrecher (Holmen, Wis. / 1,500, 4:29.08), and Isaiah Brindemour (Hinkley, Minn. / 800, 2:00.27).
Frankie Bakalars (La Crosse Wis.) notched a fourth in the hammer (47.89m), and
Tanner Moris (Crandon, Minn.) and
Jake Hogan (La Crescent, Minn.) chipped in fifths in the 1,500 (4:37.79) and 400 (53.67), respectively.
Amanda Tuvey (West St. Paul, Minn.), Emma Ririe (Darien, Ill.), Rachel Ohde (Chetek, Wis.), and Sydney Klausler (Lakeville, Minn.) all recorded first-place performances for the Cardinal women, while Caroline Gearin (Osceola, Wis.) and Anna Swanson (Osceola, Wis.) delivered a pair of Top 3 efforts.
Tuvey posted a time of 12:26.56 to win the steeplechase, while Ririe topped the field in the 5,000 with a time of 20:54.24. Ohde picked up her first place in the high jump, clearing 1.60 meters, and Klausler uncorked a leap of 5.31 meters to win the long jump.
Gearin posted a second-place time of 59.11 in winning the 400 and cleared 3.05 meters to finish third in the pole vault. Swanson, meanwhile, collected a second in the javelin with a toss of 59.11 meters and stopped the clock in 2:27.27 to place third in the 800.
Bailey Joens (Osage, Iowa) and Anna Marinc (Carol Stream, Ill.) chipped in third-place times of 27.50 in the 200 and 20:54.24 in the 5,000, respectively, while Mirijana Ganley (Nisswa, Minn.) and Alica Schurrer (Forest Lake, Minn.) finished fourth (27.68) and fifth (28.03) in the 200. The Cardinals' 4x100 (51.83) and 4x400 (4:06.94) relay teams also recorded second-place times
The Cardinals are back in action — this time on their home track — next Saturday, as Saint Mary's will host the Drake Alternative at the Saint Mary's Track and Field Complex.
