WINONA, Minn. — It was a year of firsts for Saint Mary's University's
Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.).
Â
On March 15, the Cardinal sophomore earned her first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honor, picking up a pair of impressive wins as part of her season-opening seven-match singles winning streak.
Â
And on Tuesday, Becker notched first No. 2 of the year, being named All-MIAC honorable-mention in singles when the league office announced its post-season women's tennis awards.
Â
Becker was in the midst of a stellar freshman campaign for the Cardinals, going 7-2 before the COVID-19 pandemic put the brakes on things.
Â
Unfazed, Becker picked up right where she left off, winning her first seven singles matches, and closing out the year 11-2 overall. Becker played in all nine MIAC matches for the Cardinals, compiling a 7-2 singles record — including a perfect 5-0 at No. 5. Becker also added one win at No. 3 singles and the other at No. 4.
Â
As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC also announced the 15th annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women's tennis, which included Saint Mary's
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.). Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
