NORTHFIELD, Minn. — For the Saint Mary's University track and field teams, Saturday's St. Olaf Ole Open was the Cardinals' one final tune-up prior to next weekend's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
And if their performances were any indication, the Cardinals are one fine-tuned machine.
The Cardinals put together seven first-place finishes and recorded 23 Top-5 finishes — including three Top-5 showings by both
Kyle Lichttenegger (De Pere, Wis.) and Mirijana Ganley (Nisswa, Minn.) — to place fourth in both the men's and women's team standings.
Lichttenegger teamed with
Noah Anderson (St. Paul, Minn.),
Matt Boone (Mindoro, Minn.), and
Garrett Jackson (West Linn, Ore.) to win the 4x100 relay, stopping the clock in 41.62, before adding third-place showings in the long jump (6.35m) and the 200 (22.17).
Ganley, meanwhile, joined forces with Caroline Gearin (Osceola, Wis.), Alica Schurrer (Forest Lake, Minn.), and Anna Swanson (Osceola, Wis.) to win the 4x400 relay, with a time of 4:15.19, while also adding a third in 400 (1:02.46) and a fourth in the 200 (27.64).
Boone,
Jon Meaden (Rosemount, Minn.), and
Coleton Strupp (Holmen, Wis.) delivered first-place performances for the SMU men, with Boone winning the 100 (10.79), while Meaden took first in the 1,500 (4:07.01) and Strupp won the pole vault (4.20m). Boone also added.a second in the 200 (22.0), with
Isaiah Brindamour (Hinckley, Minn.) and
Jake Homan (North Mankato, Minn.) posting thirds in the 800 (1:57.75) and shot put (13.83m), respectively, while Gabe Bickerstaff (Rollingstone, Minn.) chipped in a fifth in the 5,000 (17:25.90) and Sean Curren (Appleton, Wis.) delivered a fifth in the hammer throw (49.30m).
On the women's side, Rachel Ohde (Chetek, Wis.) took home top honors in the high jump, clearing 1.63 meters, and Gearin stopped the clock in 59.52 to win the 400. Sydney Klausler (Lakeville, Minn.) recorded third-place finishes in both the 200 (27.10) and long jump (5.18m), while Schurrer scored a fourth in the 100 (13.55) and Samantha Kubes (New Prague, Minn.) added a fourth in the hammer throw (39.79m), and Swanson and Nathalie Freire (Bloomington, Minn.) collected fifths in the 800 (2:25.30) and pole vault (2.92m), respectively.
The Cardinals will return to action next Friday and Saturday, heading to Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.) for the two-day MIAC Outdoor Championships.
