WINONA, Minn. — On a rather frigid night, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team just wasn't able to ignite its offensive fire against the University of Dubuque University Tuesday evening at Ochrymowycz Field.
The Cardinals surrendered single goals in each half in dropping a 2-0 nonconference decision to the Spartans in SMU's final nonconference game of the season.
Perhaps due to the chilly night, it seemed as though the scoreboard would stay frozen at 0-0, but the Spartans turned up the heat in the waning minutes of the first half.
Emil Josefsson, off an assist from Gavin Wooldridge, banged a shot past SMU goalkeeper
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) with less than four minutes remaining in the first half to put the Spartans up 1-0 going into the break.
Coming back from halftime, the Spartans kept their fire burning and scored another goal in the 66th minute. Jakob Youngstrom managed to wind past the SMU defenders to find the net, extending Dubuque's lead and cementing their 2-0 win.
Jack Hurley (Homewood, Ill.) led the Cardinals with three shots on goal, while
Cerim Palislamovic (Jacksonville, Fla.) and
Aidan Adamek (Helena, Mont.) each tallied one shot on goal.
Sessler was busy between the pipes for the Cardinals, stopping six shots in the first half, and adding five more saves in the second to finished with 11 saves — just one short of tying his career-high 12 saves.
The Cardinals (3-9-3 overall) will take the field again on Saturday, at 3:30 p.m. as they host Hamline University in a conference matchup at Ochrymowycz Field.
