WINONA, Minn. – The Saint Mary's University men's tennis got off to a slow start and never recovered Friday evening, as UW-Superior dealt the Cardinals a 9-0 nonconference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.

"We just never got things going tonight," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "UW-Superior got off to a strong start, and we never recovered."

The Yellowjackets made quick work of the first two doubles matches, winning 8-1 and both No. 1 and No. 2, while completing the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory oat No. 3.

UW-Superior continued to pour it on in singles, posting four straight-set singles wins, while SMU's
E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.) and
Tucker Stene () both forced the Yellowjackets to a third set in their singles contests. Hietala opened with a 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, before falling 6-1, 10-6 in the next two sets, while Stene also won the first set, 7-6 (5), but ran out of steam in falling 6-1, 10-1 at No. 6.

The Cardinals (4-3 overall) are right back in action on Saturday, returning to the Winona Tennis Center for a 4:30 p.m. nonconference match against Loras.
