• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter this weekend’s nonconference matches against UW-Superior and Loras sitting at 4-2 overall, while dropping its lone conference match thus this season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s collected three straight wins during its weekend trip to Green Bay on Feb. 4-5, sandwiching 8-1 wins over Ripon and St. Norbert around a 7-2 victory over Lawrence.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saint Mary’s is 2-1 on its home court this season — beating both Northwestern (Minn.) and Martin Luther, and falling to conference-power Carleton. Saint Mary’s three matches in Green Bay, Wis., on Feb. 4-5 were the Cardinals’ first road matches of the season.
• WEEKLY HONORS: Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) was named MIAC Athlete of the Week on Feb. 7, after posting a perfect 3-0 record in both singles and doubles during the Cardinals’ three nonconference victories over Ripon, Lawrence, and St. Norbert on Feb. 4-5.
• UNBEATEN: The Cardinals enter their nonconference contests having never lost to either UW-Superior or Loras. SMU is a perfect 2-0 in its two meetings with UW-Superior — winning 6-3 and 5-4 each of the previous two years — while sporting a 5-0 mark against Loras.
• PERFECT RUN: Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) and E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.) were each perfect in SMU’s three wins over Ripon, Lawrence, and St. Norbert on Feb. 4-5, winning all three of their singles and doubles matches.
• SINGLED OUT: With their wins on Feb. 4-5, Janssen and Hietala extended their dual-match singles win totals to five, one more than Brandon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.), while Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.) and Tucker Stene () each have three singles victories.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.) collected his first collegiate singles victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 against Lawrence on Feb. 5. Besek is the third Cardinal to record collegiate win No. 1, joining Tanner Tschumper (Foley, Minn.) and Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) — who each picked up their first collegiate singles wins at the ITA Regional/Midwest Open on Oct. 1. Tschumper kicked off his collegiate career with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 victory over Hamline’s Britton Von Ruden, while Raabolle dropped Northwestern’s Eli Henderson, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 victory. Tschumper and Raabolle joined Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.), Hietala, and Reilly Fredell (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who all notched their first Cardinal wins in 2021.
• GOING THE DISTANCE:Six of the Cardinals’ 18 singles matches against Ripon, Lawrence, and St. Norbert on Feb. 4-5 went to a third set. The Cardinals were 5-1 in those six three-setters.
en route to victories over Ripon (8-1), Lawrence (7-2), and St. Norbert (8-1). … Of the Cardinals’ 11 singles matches during the opening day of the ITA Regional/Midwest Open on Oct. 1-2, four were extended to a third set.
• DOUBLING UP: The doubles teams of Janssen/Kurilla and Hietala/Peter Quinn (Lake Elmo, Minn.) are both 4-2 in dual-match play this season, while Besek/Raabolle have posted a 2-1 record in their three matches as a doubles pair.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Janssen collected his first collegiate MIAC Athlete of the Week honor on Feb. 7, after his perfect 6-0 showing in SMU’s wins over Ripon, Lawrence, and St. Norbert on Feb. 4-5.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 7-2 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 29, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 19 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history.
• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: With their sweep of Ripon, Lawrence, and St. Norbert on Feb. 4-5, the Cardinals are now 5-0 in nonconference play this season and 71-26 vs. non-MIAC foes since 2012.
