WINONA, Minn. — It wasn't a fourth straight 9-0 outcome, but it was close.
After opening the season with three consecutive matches decided by 9-0 outcomes, the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team bucked that trend on Friday night — but the end result suited coach
Jeff Halberg just fine.
Saint Mary's picked up its third win in its first four contests, rolling to an 8-1 nonconference victory over UW-Superior Friday evening at the Winona Tennis Center.
"The ladies got out to a quick start and never took their foot off the gas," Halberg said. "They played very well from start-to-finish."
The Cardinals made quick work of the doubles portion of the match, sandwiching a par of 8-1 victories at No. 1 and No. 3 around an 8-6 triumph at No. 2 to grab a quick, 3-0 advantage.
Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.),
Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.),
Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.), and
Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) all collected straight-set singles wins, while
Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) needed three sets to complete her 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 win at No. 4.
The Cardinals (3-1 overall) are right back in action on Saturday, returning to the Winona Tennis Center for a 4:30 p.m. nonconferece match against Loras.
