SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their first conference road game at Saint Benedict sitting at 0-1-0 in conference play and 2-2-0 overall.
• LAST ACTION: Carleton scored two goals in the second half — the second coming with just nine seconds remaining in regulation — as the Knights dealt Saint Mary’s a 2-0 setback in the teams’ MIAC opener Wednesday evening at Ochrymowycz Field.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saint Mary’s loss to Carleton Wednesday was just its second loss at Ochrymowycz Field in the last 11 games (7-2-2).
• THROWING UP ZEOES: All four of the Cardinals’ games this season have been decided by shutout. Saint Mary’s beat UM-Morris 3-0 and Lawrence 2-0 to open the season, before falling to Wartburg (1-0) and Carleton (2-0). … SMU’s wins over UM-Morris and Lawrence marked the second straight season in which the Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back shutout wins.
• CAREER FIRSTS: The goals by Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.) and Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) against UM-Morris on Sept. 1 were both collegiate firsts. The Cardinals had six players net their first goal in a Saint Mary’s uniform during the 2021 season. … Skoruppa also added an assist against the Cougars on Sept. 1 en route to her first career three-point game.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Cardinals’ five goals through four games have come from five different players — Lahart, Skoruppa, Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.), Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Minn.), and Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.).
• POINT PRODUCER: Along with her goal, Falkman has also assisted on two of SMU’s other four goals to lead the team with four points, one more than McKinney and Skoruppa.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) — the reigning MIAC Defensive Player of the Year — has started all four games in goal for the Cardinals, owning a 0.75 goals-against-average and .824 save percentage. … Nguyen did not have to make a save en route to her first shutout of the season against UM-Morris on Sept. 1, before adding a two-save shutout against Lawrence three days later. Nguyen, who recorded eight shutouts a year ago, has now collected 11 shutouts in her four-year collegiate career.
• BUSY NIGHT: Nguyen has stopped a season-high six shots in each of the Cardinals’ last two games. Nguyen finished with a career-high 10 saves against St. Catherine a year ago.
• AS A TEAM: The Cardinals’ five goals this season have all come in the second half. Saint Mary’s scored 19 of its 41 goals in the second half last season. … Saint Mary’s owns a 55-42 advantage in shot attempts through four games — including 26-17 in shots on goal. … SMU holds a 20-10 edge in SOG over the game’s final 45 minutes.
• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals closed out the 2021 season with a 7-3-1 record in MIAC play and a 13-5-2 overall record — reaching the MIAC Tournament semifinals, where they dropped a 3-2 decision to second-seeded Saint Benedict. … The Cardinals’ seven conference wins are the most since 1995, when the Cardinals went 7-2-1, while SMU’s 13 overall victories are the most since the 2005 team finished 13-5-0. … Saint Mary’s 10-1-1 start to the season was its best start since opening the 1991 season 11-1-0. That 1991 team went on to finish 14-4-0 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, falling to UC-San Diego in the opening round. … The Cardinals also opened the 1988 season 11-1-0 — it’s the best 12-game start in program history.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The NCAA implemented a new rule beginning with the 2022 that will eliminate all overtimes in regular-season games. Games that are deadlocked following the scheduled 90 minute will go in the books as ties. Once in post-season, if a game is tied following regulation, there will be two, 10-minute overtime periods — with no golden goal — followed by a shootout if the game is still tied.
SAINT BENEDICT BENNIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Bennies head into Saturday’s showdown against Saint Mary’s sitting at 2-3-0 overall, including an 0-1-0 record in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: In a rematch of last season’s MIAC Playoff title game, St. Catherine jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held off a furious CSB rally to deal the Bennies a 2-1 setback. … The Wildcats defeated Saint Benedict 1-0 in last year’s playoff title game.

Caralyn Conners, Erica Golenzer, Lana Krautkremer, and Ella Young have accounted for CSB’s other four goals. … Voss has scored all three of her goals in CSB’s last two games — netting two against Luther on Sept. 11, and accounting for Saint Benedict’s lone goal in Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to ST. Catherine.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Saint Benedict’s four assists this season have come from four different players — Conners, Sydney Burns, Addison Stephani, and Ellie Wohnoutka.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Fueled by her three goals, Voss lead the team in points with six, followed by Conners with three, and Golenzer, Krautkremer, and Young with two each.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: The Bennies have used two different goalkeepers this season, with Paige Kahlmeyer seeing the brunt of the action, compiling a 0.62 goals-against-average and .882 save percentage in four starts.
